New Torstenson Trek Gives Elk Foundation Youths an Opportunity to Hike the Double H

Through its Volunteer Week and various other events, the Torstenson Wildlife Center strives to give Elk Foundation members a chance to experience the Double H first hand. Few things compare, though, to hiking seven days off-trail across the ranch’s backcountry. In 2007, the Boy Scouts launched a program to make it as easy as possible for youngsters from Elk Foundation families to sign up to hike the Double H.

Participants, 14 to 21 years old, come together with other Elk Foundation youths from around the country and are led by two Double H High Adventure Base staff members known as wilderness guides. All coed crews have a male and female wilderness guide 21 years of age or older.

The trek costs $380 and includes gear, staff leadership and 18 meals—quite reasonable compared to most similar programs. The participant must meet certain height/weight ratio requirements, be able to hike five or more miles per day with a 40- to 50-pound backpack and have some previous hiking, camping or wilderness experience.

Applicants are asked to provide a letter of recommendation from an adult member of the Elk Foundation detailing their backcountry experience and character.

Applicants should apply early for best consideration, and when accepted, the Boy Scouts sends a packet of materials to assist in preparation. A shuttle from Albuquerque to the Double H is available for those who need it.
