Where Are Bulls Most Likely to Shed their Antlers?
Paul Queneau
Most bulls shed their antlers during March and April when their testosterone level hits low tide.  Depending on snow-depth and weather, the elk may still be down on winter range or following green-up back into the hills. Either way, for shed hunters it pays to be a wood tick. Yes, lots of bulls shed their antlers out on open, grassy south-facing slopes. And if a person manages to be the first on the scene, these spots can be a bonanza. But as with most hunting, the easy and obvious don’t last long. The people who come up with big sheds year after year spend lots of time crawling the thick nasties. Good areas for searching are natural funnels: saddles, tight canyons and brushy draws that show signs of recent use. Upon finding a good antler, flag the spot or log it into your GPS and search in a grid or concentric circles out from there. Like a cobra, its mate often lies nearby.
