How Elk Avoid Being Eaten
- They feed in groups.
- In a group, at least one elk is usually watching for danger.
- They stay alert and are curious about anything unusual.
- They sniff the air regularly and recognize a predator by its scent.
- An elk barks if it senses danger. This alerts others and together the group might identify the trouble.
- If alone, an elk may stay in the trees.
- Elk avoid places where they can't run easily, such as areas covered with deep snow or downed trees.
- A cow usually confronts a predator that is near a newborn calf. The predator will probably leave rather than risk being hit by her sharp hooves.
- Elk gang up on coyotes, which then leave.
- If all else fails, elk run. They are faster and have more endurance than most of their predators.
