Nomination Information
Candidates for the Elk Foundation’s Olaus J. Murie Award may include wildlife biologists, researchers or habitat managers for state, federal, tribal or private agencies and organizations who stand out among their peers, have gone “above and beyond” what is required of them in their jobs, and exemplify the spirit and actions of Olaus J. Murie. Candidates must be active or retired professionals whose work provides, or has provided, significant contributions to our knowledge and conservation of wild, free-ranging elk in North America. The award will recognize individuals for their personal and professional accomplishments; it will not be presented to companies, groups, agencies or organizations. The award will not be given after one’s death.
Criteria Candidates for the award will be judged by the following five criteria:
- Relevance of work to the conservation of wild, free-ranging elk: A nominee must be currently employed in, or recently retired from, a professional career as a scientist, wildlife biologist or land manager with a state, federal, provincial, tribal or private land or wildlife agency or organization. His or her work must have, or have had, direct relevance to wild, free-ranging elk.
- Application of work, “on the ground,” to benefit wild, free-ranging elk: The nominee’s work must have, or have had, actual and demonstrated benefits to the scientific management of elk or elk habitat.
- Dedication to his or her profession: The accomplishments and actions of the nominee must have shown a desire and dedication to go above and beyond the normal course of duty, as demonstrated by publications, participation in professional organizations and symposiums, recognitions and awards, and other activities.
- Commitment to the conservation of wild, free-ranging elk: Through actions relating to his or her job, and outside of the job, the nominee must have demonstrated a sincere commitment and devotion to the conservation of wild, free-ranging elk, other wildlife and their habitat.
- Credibility and respect among peers: The nominee must have earned respect and credibility among his or her peers, as demonstrated by awards, recognitions, honors, participation in professional organizations and other examples of leadership and respect in the wildlife and conservation profession.
