Project WILD spreads the word about conservation and the environment by teaching teachers and providing high-quality conservation education materials through topic-specific WILD guides. Educators attend a workshop, where they participate in up to 15 activities from the WILD guides that are cross-referenced with state and national education standards; receive training in how to use the program’s instructional resources; receive curriculum and lesson plans for use in their classrooms; and typically get the opportunity to prepare and present an activity and/or lesson plan to other workshop participants.

In 1993, the Elk Foundation helped create a WILD About Elk guide for Project WILD as part of a partnership with the Council for Environmental Education to disseminate elk education materials to teachers and children grades 5 to 8 in North America. In addition, we’ve created an extensive set of curriculum-based lesson plans that can be used and adapted for all ages. The goal is to train educators in elk natural history and wildlife management and land use issues. Through the program we provide support to states conducting workshops on elk, typically by sending materials and supplies, including Elk Education Kits, upon request.

By exposing educators to our message and quality educational materials through WILD About Elk Teacher Workshops, we help teach youth across North America about elk, other wildlife, habitat and management issues so they can form more educated opinions about the wild world around them.
