A new Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation conservation easement near Prescott, Arizona, will protect the integrity of surrounding public lands and stands tall as the Foundation's first easement in the state. The 2,244-acre parcel surrounds Little Thumb Butte and is tucked between state lands and the Prescott National Forest. Its sloping grasslands rise up toward craggy ridges, providing year-round range for resident elk as well as mule deer and pronghorn antelope, and winter range for migrating elk. The land is a compilation of old homesteads that historically was and presently is used for livestock grazing. With subdivisions enchroaching on wild and open land, prime habitat is scarce around Prescott--one of the fastest growing areas in the state. This new 2,244-acre conservation easement couldn't have come at a more opportune time. |
