In 2006, the Elk Foundation helped The Nature Conservancy (TNC) protect a portion of a historic ranch known for its tule elk herd in Santa Clara County. Located in central California’s Diablo Range and adjacent to Henry Coe State Park, the 2,899-acre San Antonio Valley-South Ranch property is characterized by rolling foothills, rugged canyons, oak woodlands and seasonal streams. The property provides year-round habitat for tule elk and is home to black-tailed deer, valley quail, golden eagles and mountain lions.

TNC plans to convey it to the California Department of Fish and Game who will manage it as a wildlife management area. The acquisition is part of larger project launched by TNC to protect the biologically rich 625-square-mile Mount Hamilton area which sits between the fast-growing population centers of the Silicon Valley to the west and the Central Valley to the east. Elk Foundaton funds for this project came from the Ted K. Martin Habitat Conservation Fund.
