Towering above Trinidad, Colorado, with a distinctive table top summit, 9,627-foot Fisher's Peak is one of the most prominent landmarks in southeastern Colorado and a National Natural Landmark. Its slopes are cloaked in forests of native pinyon and juniper mingled with cedar, mountain mahogany, oak shrubs as well as a variety of grasses and forbs--excellent forage and cover for elk, mule deer and wild turkeys, black bears and mountain lions, as well as a variety of other wildlife including peregrine falcons, and Townsend's big-eared bats--both species of special concern. Fisher's Peak now also hosts another Elk Foundation conservation easement-- an additional 480-acres--the second in a three-phase project that should eventually conserve 800-acres of critical wildlife habitat. The first phase permanently protected 247-acres of summer and winter range for elk and mule deer in December of 2006
