The Wildcat Hills of Nebraska's southern panhandle are increasingly threatened by development, and habitat fragmentation continues. But 5,700-acres of critical wildlife habitat in the Hills will not fall prey to pavement, homes and strip malls, thanks to a partnership between the Elk Foundation, Nebraska Game and Parks Commission (GPC) and Platte River Basin Environments, Inc (PRBE). The partners teamed up in 2007 to acquire the land, which provides vital winter range and a travel corridor for elk. The property also supports bighorn sheep, deer, turkey and grouse. PRBE is holding the
land until the deed is transferred over to GPC. The two entities plan to combine the property with the 2,400-acre Enlow Tract, an adjacent parcel that was also acquired in 2007, and manage the entire property as a
wildlife management area for wildlife, education and recreation, including hunting. |
