With financial and logistical assistance from the Elk Foundation, the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources secured a conservation easement on 913acres of ranchland bordering the Tabby Mountain Wildlife Management Area. This conservation easement was acquired in tandem with a conservation easement acquired by the Natural Resources Conservation Service through its Grasslands Reserve Program on 4,800 acre of adjoining land. The properties provide critical winter habitat for elk and mule deer. Both resident and migratory Strawberry Valley sage grouse rely on this land. Other sagebrush obligate birds such as the Brewer's sparrow and sage sparrow occupy the area. Protecting this land at this time was considered absolutely critical. The property is located within 2 1/2 hours of Salt Lake City and the majority of accessible lands in the region have been approved for subdivision with properties being aggressively marketed and sold. |
