When a ranch has been in the family for more than 120 years, ensuring it remains intact in perpetuity is a no-brainer.
In 2009, the owners of the Ladder Ranch approached The Nature Conservancy (TNC) about putting a conservation easement on their property. TNC asked the Elk Foundation to help cover the costs, and together placed an easement protecting 1,518 acres of migration routes and winter range for the second-largest deer herd and the largest elk herd in the state managed for hunting.
The ranch also sits along Battle Creek, one of the last two strongholds for Colorado River cutthroat trout outside Colorado, and is surrounded by lands that support the largest population of Columbian sharp-tailed grouse found anywhere in the central Rockies.
