A family of Elk Foundation supporters took it a step further in 2009 when they placed a conservation easement on their 160-acre ranch west of Laramie, Wyoming.
The property’s steep lodgepole pine-blanketed slopes descend from 8,800 feet down to grassy meadows at 7,400 feet. Two small streams, forks of John’s Creek, as well as several seeps and springs provide water for the mule deer, pronghorn antelope and blue grouse that inhabit the parcel. The easement also protects crucial winter range for elk.
The parcel is surrounded on three sides by Medicine Bow National Forest. The easement ensures that sprawl from Laramie will never touch this vital piece of wildlife habitat lying adjacent to public lands.
