ILLINOIS

Friday Night Lights

RMEF was part of the halftime entertainment at Pinckneyville Community High School on October 12, 2011, when committee member Bill McNitt (right), on behalf of the Shawnee Chapter, presented a $10,000 endowment to shooting team coach Stu Wright. The endowment was generated through support from the Midway USA Foundation and local RMEF fundraisers, and will generate about $500 per year in perpetuity. The team may use the funds for ammunition, targets or any equipment needed for shooting sports programs. Pinckneyville High’s shooting team won the Scholastic Clay Target Program’s 2011 sporting clays national championship, breaking 513 of 600 targets over two days of competition.

SOUTH DAKOTA

A Grand Pie, Times Three

Every RMEF big game banquet has its highlights and the 22nd annual Black Hills Chapter’s Benefit Auction and Dinner held last April 30 in Rapid City, South Dakota, was no exception. The live auction featured a “Homemade Granny Smith Apple Pie” donated by committee member Lori Kier (wearing the blue shirt). Lori made the pie with over 5 lbs of Granny Smith apples and branded it with the RMEF logo. Prior to the auction, Lori had told several committee members that she would cry if the pie happened to bring a couple hundred dollars. When the pie came up for auction it soon turned into a bidding war between Jill and Dean Hamm (far left), Mary and Jim Scull (center) and Jon and Lanceine Ziegler (far right). Auctioneer Gary Messner stopped the bidding at $1000 and offered a solution: if Lori agreed to make two more pies for a grand each, would they all buy one? The bidders agreed and Lori said she would oblige in making two more pies to their individual specifications. And then, Lori cried. ~Submitted by Kellie Ecker, South Dakota RMEF Volunteer Chair.
