Partners in Conservation: Kryptek
By Emily Schabacker
In February, Butch Whiting, cofounder of Kryptek Outdoor Group, and others received two Partners in Conservation plaques from RMEF for sponsoring the statewide, yearlong Idaho Elk Super Raffle three years in a row. Since 2016, Kryptek has helped raised over $53,000 for RMEF by donating merchandise for raffle prizes. The raffle generates funds at most Idaho events throughout the year by selling raffle tickets for the chance to win top of the line hunting gear.
RMEF southern Idaho Regional Director Jameson Sharp presented Whiting with level three and level four Partners in Conservation medallions for his donations in the 2017 super raffle. Partners in Conservation recognizes individuals and businesses that make donations in the form of merchandise and/or participate in cause-related marketing programs that are not recognized in the Habitat Partner program—goods and services as well as sponsorships to support RMEF’s hunting heritage and conservation goals.
“These donations may be used for fundraising at RMEF Big Game Banquets, women’s events, Elk Camp, archery tournaments, golf tournaments, raffles or purely for the organization’s general use,” says Ralph Cinfio, RMEF vice president of fundraising services. “A good example of the organization’s general use might be donating building materials to RMEF when we built our new headquarters.”
Donors can receive awards based on the amount of net return their donation brings to RMEF or the fair market value of the donation if not used for fundraising. Level one awards are granted to individuals or companies whose contributions raise $5,000. Awards are granted all the way up to a level eight Wildlife Legacy Award for raising $1 million or more.
Through fundraising events, RMEF begins tracking a donor’s giving in this program when their donation generates a minimum of $250 net dollars. To receive credit for raffle donations, RMEF uses a raffle calculator to determine the percent of one prize in relation to the total value of all other prizes in the raffle.
In the 2017, Kryptek and partners single-handedly sponsored the raffle by donating all the merchandise used for prizes. The raffle generated over $30,000 in ticket sales.
The Idaho Elk Super Raffle hasn’t always had this much success, says Sharp. Popularity only picked up after Kryptek began sponsoring the fundraiser.
“Years ago we used to give a $1,500 gift card, and that was our statewide raffle,” Sharp says. “Then the Elk Foundation started buying stuff to supplement the raffle so we could give out prizes to 10 people. But since we were able to get Kryptek involved, it’s been a lot more popular and we’ve been able to make a lot more money.”
Kryptek stepped up again in 2018 to sponsor the Idaho Elk Super Raffle and is providing around 80 percent of the merchandise for this year’s prizes. They range from Kryptek clothing packages to a Weatherby Vanguard Deluxe rifle, both donated by Kryptek and their partners. The drawing will take place on December 1, 2018. Tickets are on sale for one ticket for $10, three for $20 or 20 for $100. Buy 20 tickets for $100 for a chance to win the bonus prize donated by Sportsman’s Warehouse.
