Get Social! Using Social Media to Reach Out
By Mark Holyoak, Director of Communication
“Social media may be the most valuable media we have as we move forward.”—David Allen, RMEF President/CEO
According to Social Media Today, there were 2.8 billion active social media users worldwide in January 2017. That’s roughly 37 percent of everyone who lives on Earth and a 22 percent increase over a year ago. Additionally, seven in 10 Americans use social media to connect with each other on a consistent basis.
Unique monthly users by network:
Facebook — 1.9 billion
YouTube 1 billion
Instagram — 600 million
Twitter — 317 million
LinkedIn — 106 million
The bottom-line is social media gives each of us a voice, a platform and an audience like at no time ever before in the history of the world. As David Allen stated above, social media is an extremely valuable media, and the RMEF uses it on a daily basis to raise awareness, offer education and spread our conservation message.
RMEF Social Media Platforms:
Facebook — 510K+ followers
YouTube — 1.4 million views
Instagram — 100K+ followers
Twitter — 35K+ followers
If you oversee a chapter or state RMEF page on Facebook, you can inform your followers and attract new ones by posting engaging, consumable, educational and entertaining content. The easiest way to do so is to go to the RMEF Facebook page, click on “share” beneath a given photo or video post and then post it directly to your page. Make sure to publicize your banquets or other events before they happen. And after your events, make sure to post photos and videos. You can also monitor RMEF’s other social media platforms on Instagram, YouTube and Twitter.
If you have not yet checked out the Elk Network, make sure you do so. RMEF’s new online hub covers all things elk, elk country and elk hunting. It includes nine different channels ranging from RMEF Team Elk television episodes to recipes and hunting gear to RMEF’s on-the-ground conservation work. You can copy and paste links directly to your chapter and state Facebook and Twitter pages.
And don’t forget to share RMEF-related links on your personal channels too. The average Facebook user has anywhere from 150 to 330 friends. So if you share a RMEF post, it can be seen by that many people. If they share it as well, the number of viewers exponentially increases.
