New Shooting Event Sure to Please All Ages
by Northeast New Mexico Chapter
Mark your calendars! The Elk Foundation’s Northeast New Mexico Chapter will be teaming up with the NRA Whittington Center in Raton to put on a one-of-a-kind of shooting event designed especially for hunters August 26-28, 2011. RMEF chapter volunteers and the Whittington Center will provide an exciting weekend of shooting opportunities testing your hunting skills in a variety of simulated field situations.
Dave Schutz, program director of the Whittington Center, says the weekend event will provide fun and challenging targets on the shooting ranges for everyone. Committee members from the Northeast New Mexico Chapter helped design the main event so it would challenge every elk hunter. There will be a 10-station course with two targets each, for a total of 20 targets with bonus rounds. The main competition includes shooting classes for women, men and youths, plus a special RMEF chapter team competition for those chapters that want to compete against each other. A unique traveling trophy will be awarded to the best chapter team. We will also be teaming up with United Bowhunters of New Mexico to host a 3-D archery competition using the same concept as the rifle competition, including a RMEF chapter team competition. Both competitions are limited to 150 competitors each.
Besides the main competition, participants can compete in many other shooting events, such as sporting clays, five-stand shotgun, pistol and rifle. There are plenty of fun shooting events for youths as well. Many vendors will be on hand to let you test drive their latest products and give advice on how to improve your hunting and shooting skills.
The event begins on Friday with open shooting to allow people to warm up, followed by several fun events and an informal appetizer party in the evening for registered shooters. Then on Saturday the shooting events begin in earnest. We will wrap up on Sunday with an awards breakfast ceremony.
The chapter will also be introducing a new RMEF program sponsored by Midway USA: “Shooting Access for Everyone (SAFE)” for youths 10 to 18, as well as activities for novice shooters. This program provides a good introduction to our hunting heritage and excellent resources for all who love to hunt.
Plan to join us for the Northeast New Mexico Chapter’s big game banquet held at the Whittington Center following the shoot on Saturday. Be prepared for the same high energy, fun and camaraderie you find at all RMEF banquets.
The Whittington Center has facilities for those who would like to stay overnight. Or you can stay in one of Raton’s many hotels only a few minutes away.
