Feature Stories for Mar-Apr 19
The Perils of Shedding Antlers — This feature highlights 12 years of research in and around Yellowstone documenting that bulls that shed their antlers early are 3½ times more likely to be killed by wolves. We’re looking for shots of mixed groups of bulls where some have their antlers and some don’t; antlered bulls fending off wolves (or mountain lions or grizzlies); wolves chasing bulls with and without antlers; close-ups of bulls’ pedicles fresh after antlers shed; un-staged shots of freshly shed antlers in snow or on open slopes, etc. Also, massive healthy-looking bulls in late winter/early spring without antlers, or less healthy or younger bulls in same time span still wearing a rack.
Trial by Blizzard — Feature about a tough elk pack-out. We’re looking for landscapes of steep, snowy, sagebrush-covered hills slanting up into black timber; shot of a hunter (ideally towing a sled but carrying a pack would work) walking through driving snow; fresh grizzly tracks in snow; boot tracks in snow through sage or timber with snow pounding down; a gnarly sloppy narrow road combo of snow and churned mud.
Evolution Among Peaks — Hunting feature. We’re looking for shots of a big bunch of cows bedded on a steep, hillside—ideally snow-covered with grass poking through. Would be a bonus if also included timber above or to the side. An even bigger bonus if they’re happened to be a bull standing in that timber.
Photo Essay Ideas
Photo Essay: Rain Check — Shots of thoroughly wet elk, whether soaked by rain or from swimming. Elk in rain or shaking off water would also be great. Bulls, cows and calves from all seasons welcome.
Photo Essay: Under the Rainbow — Shots of elk beneath rainbows, arcs and sundogs. Again, bulls, cows and calves from all seasons welcome.
Photo Essay: Monumental Elk — Shots of elk beside iconic landscape features, ideally in national monuments, but national parks and wilderness areas fair game. We’re looking for elk near highly recognizable features like Devil’s Tower, the Chinese Wall, the Grand Canyon, Chimney Rock, etc.
Photo Essay: Straight & Narrow — Shots of bulls with unusually straight and/or narrow racks, all seasons, all sizes fine.
Photo Essay: Winter Coats — Shots of elk with especially impressive winter coats; bulls, cows & calves.
Photo Essay: Huge Herds — Shots of elk so numerous that it harks back to paintings like Charlie Russell’s When the Land Belonged to God with animals (in that case bison) as far as the eye could see.
