We have experienced a growing interest in our Women in the Outdoors column, from women and men, since its inception in 1995. Letters show us that readers enjoy stories and essays about women’s experiences afield. So we are always on the hunt for new tales and new voices.

We are looking for personal essays and stories, 1,000 to 3,000 words in length, concerning elk, hunting, wildlife encounters, conservation and land-use issues. We are especially interested in thought-provoking stories and essays: personal narratives that evoke emotion and suggest connections to larger themes or ask (or attempt to answer) questions that touch the human heart.

Either write us with your story idea, including a brief outline, or submit the story itself. All manuscripts and queries will be given thoughtful consideration and be evaluated on content, the quality of writing and our needs for the coming year. We also encourage you to query us with ideas for feature stories or departments such as Thoughts and Theories and Situation Ethics. You may submit your story or query by e-mail or post. (Please enclose an SASE if you would like your story returned.)

The Elk Foundation is a nonprofit conservation organization committed to putting membership dollars into elk habitat, management and research. Donated memberships help the Elk Foundation put more funds into habitat and are tax deductible. However, we gladly purchase manuscripts and pay 20 cents per word on acceptance. When your story appears in Bugle, you will also receive three complimentary copies of the issue.

We will notify you when we receive your query or story and let you know, at a later date (usually within two months), if we plan to buy it. But please feel free to inquire into its status at any time.
