Elk NetworkPoachers Threaten Vancouver Island’s Elk Herd

It’s a troubling trend on Canada’s scenic Vancouver Island. Poachers killed more than 10 Roosevelt elk over the last several months of 2020.

“We have concerns for the elk population because of that,” Scott Norris, B.C. Conservation Officer Service sergeant, told the Times Columnist. “Because obviously, the population would not be sustainable if people continue to take elk in an unregulated manner.”

Wildlife officials indicate there are about 3,000 elk on the island. Approximately 20 elk tags are given out each hunting season although elk are continuously trying to avoid predators such as wolves and black bears.

For 2020, Remington partnered with the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation to increase the visibility of poaching incidents in an effort to reduce poaching.
