It happened on September 23, 1972. President Richard Nixon signed a proclamation designating the fourth Saturday in September as National Hunting and Fishing Day.

“I urge all citizens to join with outdoor sportsmen in the wise use of our natural resources and in insuring their proper management for the benefit of future generations,” wrote Nixon.

The Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation is a long-time advocate of hunting, fishing and outdoor recreation and is an official sponsor of National Hunting and Fishing Day that will take place on Saturday, September 26, 2020.

Hunting is the key tool utilized by wildlife managers in maintaining and improving wildlife populations. It also funds conservation thanks to the purchase of hunting licenses and fees, an excise tax on guns, ammunition and archery equipment, and donations to conservation organizations like RMEF.
