Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation volunteers from across Western Oregon gathered outside of Charleston to support the RMEF Seven Devils project. This 600-acre chunk of land was purchased by Coos County in 2019 and hosts numerous landscape features and terrain suited perfectly for elk and other wildlife. A unique partnership between Coos County and RMEF will provide the public with recreational opportunities as well as a great wildlife area that will be home to many species of animals. The diverse landscape with creeks, meadows and hills is home to an already healthy herd of elk.
Oregon’s project coordinator Mark Allard and South Coast Chapter co-chairs Rick Gleason and Gary Haga teamed up volunteers and built a wildlife-friendly fence on the west side. The fence will allow calves to duck under and older elk to jump over the fence. The team also removed a barbed-wire fence, did some mowing and some spent a night on the project site. Camping was provided as well as a hearty lunch.
The South Coast Chapter had an excellent year in fundraising, plus rallied its committee and volunteers for boots on the ground projects. Congratulations to South Coast for a great year and THANK YOU to all of our volunteers who traveled to the coast and supported our new project site that will be home to many others in the future.
