Gear 101 | November 10, 2020

In 2020, RMEF’s longtime partner Yamaha, released the feature-rich and just plain fun Wolverine X2 XT-R 850—it doesn’t disappoint.

First, you’ll notice the aggressive Dirt Commander radial tires, integrated heavy-duty WARN winch and 11.5 inches of maximum ground clearance. The paint job isn’t bad either. The 600-pound capacity bed is simple to use and provides easy access to the engine.

Hop in the cockpit where you’ll find ample head and legroom. Adjust the tilt steering and seat to your liking.

When you ignite the 847cc eight-valve parallel twin-cylinder motor, you’ll be surprised at how quiet it runs. The all-digital meter is dimmable with warnings and trip info easily read.  On-command 4WD is at your fingertips.

Once you get going, the plush and adjustable independent suspension bears the brunt of just about any obstacle while Yamaha’s Electronic Power Steering takes little effort.  Full underbody skid plates run from the front differential to the rear gear case.

Yamaha’s Ultramatic transmission features an oversized belt to handle the large motor and the sprag clutch maintains constant belt tension for years of hassle-free riding. It’s backed by Yamaha’s 10-year V-belt limited warranty.

And if all that wasn’t enough, little features throughout make a big

difference. The door handles placed on the inside reduce snags on the trail. The adjustable passenger bar is nice touch. 2000-pound towing capacity makes big jobs around camp easier. Fuses, tool kit and a Speed Management System, which limits the top speed at 25 mph, are conveniently located under the front panel.

If you’re in the market for a rugged, fun and capable off-road powerhouse, check out Yamaha’s Wolverine X2 XT-R before they disappear.
