The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) detected an estimated minimum wolf population of 925-956 wolves during 2016-2017, representing a 6.8 percent increase from 2015-2016. In light of the Great Lakes wolf population numbering well above original recovery goals, the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation calls for delisting and/or Congressional action to allow state agencies the authority to manage wolves as they manage all other wildlife.Great Lakes Recovery PlanThe Great Lakes recovery plan originally identified 1,250 to 1,400 as a population goal for Minnesota and a combined population of 100 in Wisconsin and Michigan. The latest count indicates a minimum population of 2,278 in Minnesota, 925-956 in Wisconsin and 618 in Michigan.Great Lakes Latest CountWolf numbers and distribution in the Western Great Lakes have exceeded the population criteria identified in the recovery plan continuously since at least 2001.

RMEF remains a staunch advocate of state-based wildlife management in line with the North American Wildlife Conservation Model.

The Service delisted the Western Great Lakes DPS because it supports a robust, self-sustaining wolf.
