Elk NetworkHelp Solve New Mexico Elk Poaching Case

General | September 23, 2022

Below is a Facebook post from the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish. For 2022, Fiocchi partnered with the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation to increase the visibility of poaching incidents in an effort to reduce poaching nationwide.

On Thursday, September 8, 2022, at approximately 6:30 AM, a headless bull elk was discovered on Gavilan Canyon Rd, Ruidoso, NM, across from the Hall’s Hideaway RV Park.

The elk was shot, the head was removed and the entire body was left to waste. Local area residents noticed a bull elk they usually see with cows was missing and notified local officers. It is believed the bull often seen in the residential neighborhood is to be the headless bull elk found.

The bull elk was seen alive on Wednesday, September 7, 2022. We believe the elk to be killed between Wednesday 9/7/22 around 2:00 PM to Thursday 9/8/22 at 6:00 AM. Officers are actively investigating this case and looking for anyone who may have information or witnessed the incident.

If you have any information regarding this incident, please call Officer Joseph Morales at 505-412-2366 or you can make a report anonymously at https://onlinesales.wildlife.state.nm.us/public/ogt.
