Elk in the Pacific Northwest are swimming to locations where they’ve been rarely been seen. Two young bull elk just showed up on Orcas Island, Washington, one of a chain of islands only miles from the U.S.-Canada border.
Not long ago, an elk made an appearance on Whidbey Island about 70 miles to the south.
“The Whidbey elk was seen down in the (Skagit) valley with a band of cows and we think someone booted him and he took off west instead of east, and that’s probably what happened here,” Ruth Milner, Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife biologist, told Northwest Sportsman.
Orcas Island is located in the San Juan Island chain. It is approximately 100 miles northwest of Seattle and some 50 miles south of Vancouver, British Columbia.
