Whether it’s public or private land, there is one thing every hunter must have to hunt…and that’s access.
The Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation is a national leader in creating and improving public access.
RMEF does so by acquiring and conveying land to state or federal agencies, re-routing roads or trails, working with private landowners, securing access agreements and working with partners to creatively solve access challenges that open the door to difficult-to-reach stretches of public land.
It also grants funding specifically to benefit state-based access programs.
Dating back more than two decades, RMEF contributed more than $352,000 in grants and donations to agencies to improve public access in Idaho, Montana, South Dakota and Wyoming.
In Wyoming alone over the last seven years, RMEF dollars opened or improved free access for hunters and anglers to more than 441,000 acres of private, state and landlocked public land as well as more than 4,000 lakes and miles of rivers and streams.
And in South Dakota, funding bolsters the state’s Elk Hunting Access Program that helps address depredation issues on private land in the Black Hills while also increasing hunter success.
Since 1984, RMEF and its partners opened or improved public access to more than 1.3 million acres of land.
