Elk NetworkResearch Focuses on How Elk Use Burn Areas

Conservation | May 1, 2020

Scientists and biologists are trying to determine how elk use landscapes previously burned by wildfire.

According to survivingseason.com, the study, funded in part by the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation and involving several other partners, monitors 59 cow elk wearing GPS collars on the Blackfoot Clearwater Wildlife Management Area in western Montana.

Researchers are tracking how the elk move across the 160,000-acre Rice Ridge burn in order to better understand how they use forage areas according to different levels of burn severity.

Results are expected the next year or two.
