Elk NetworkSouth Dakota Offers Winter Depredation Hunts

General | December 3, 2017

Beginning Dec. 1, 2017, residents of South Dakota can register for hunts designed to help reduce damage on private land caused by deer, elk, antelope and turkey.

“Winter depredation hunts are a valuable management tool that South Dakota Game, Fish & Parks (GFP) uses in some situations to alleviate wildlife damage to landowners’ stored-feed supplies,” said Keith Fisk, GFP wildlife damage program administrator. “Depredation hunts are largely dependent upon the severity of the winter, snowfall accumulations and the number of animals involved.”

Hunters can register free-of-charge; however, if a hunter is selected for an elk depredation permit, there is a $20 fee. All other depredation permits are issued for free. Register here.
