Elk NetworkWisconsin Awaits Final Shipment of Kentucky Elk

Conservation | March 27, 2019

Approximately four dozen elk are in an oversized holding pen in Kentucky awaiting transfer to their new home in northern Wisconsin. Once that takes place, in early April 2019, the animals will again be held in quarantine to be checked for disease until their release sometime this summer.

The transfer caps a five-year agreement between the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife.

Kentucky crews captured the elk in January. The elk will eventually be released in the Flambeau River State Forest near Clam Lake, Wisconsin.

The Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation provided both funding and volunteer manpower to assist with the multi-year project.
