A Montana man has been found guilty of poaching and faces serious penalties. Hyatt Voy of Lewistown was sentenced in the Tenth Judicial District Court to four years with the Department of Corrections, with all but 102 days suspended. Voy has served 10 days of his sentence in the Fergus County Detention Center and is required to report back for the remaining 92 days in September, during the 2026 Montana fall hunting season. He is also required to pay fines and $8,000 in restitution and received a seven-year suspension of hunting, fishing and trapping privileges in Montana and other states participating in the Interstate Wildlife Violator Compact.

Voy was found guilty of illegal harvest on private property. During the 2024 general hunting season, Voy—who worked as a realtor in the Lewistown area—used his real estate license to access a ranch property that was currently being considered for sale. While there, he killed a mule deer buck without permission from the landowner.

Game wardens say tips from the public often play a key role in solving wildlife crimes. Anyone with information about suspected violations can report them through the state’s TipMont system here.
