Bowhunting Roosevelt’s elk in coastal Oregon can be one big waiting game—no matter if it’s during the rut. When Tanner Leaton from Eberlestock heads there in mid-September, he quickly learns the most important thing he can carry into the field won’t be in his hands or on his back, but in his mindset.
Leaton targets a herd on a predictable bed-to-feed pattern, and waiting in a blind seems to be the best bet. But with bugling bulls nearly in range and terrain that begs for a stalk, the lifelong hunter wrestles with his desire to make a move. Can he maintain his patience long enough to get an opportunity for a shot?
