According to the Pennsylvania Game Commission (PGC), 144 hunters harvested 118 elk (82 percent) over the state’s three 2023 season segments of archery, general and late.

“The success rates are on average,” Jeremy Banfield, PGC elk biologist, told Public Opinion.

A statistical breakdown shows hunters took 59 bulls and 59 cows. There are approximately 1,400 elk in Pennsylvania. The revenue generated from hunting licenses and fees goes toward elk management and conservation.

Dating back to 1991, the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation and its partners completed 432 conservation and hunting outreach projects that conserved 29,449 acres and opened or improved public access to 10,838 acres.
