The Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation continued its long-time support of America’s troops and their families by co-sponsoring Fort Hunter Liggett’s 2017 Youth Fishing Derby. More than 230 anglers took part along with more than 600 other family members and friends.
In addition to a day of fun by the water, the event also celebrated the month of the military child and the Army Reserve’s birthday while promoting fishing as a family bonding experience. The first 200 children received a free fishing pole to try to hook the 2,100 pounds of recently stocked fish. There were also raffle prizes and a barbecue lunch.
RMEF’s collaboration with Fort Hunter Liggett dates back to 1999 and involves 19 different projects including noxious weed treatments, aerial elk surveys, fence removal and wounded warrior hunts. The base is located approximately 130 miles south of San Jose in central California.
