Elk NetworkKeep Public Lands Public

Again and again, the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation continues to state its position against the sale or transfer of federal lands to states. With the majority of important elk habitat spread across federal lands, such a move would harm public access and wildlife management.

A Field & Stream article shows the history why this is such a bad idea. The infographic below by Field & Stream outlines how massive tracts of what were once federal lands are now closed to public access after being sold off by states. In short, 156 million acres of land were entrusted to the 48 contiguous states which, so far, sold off 110 million acres or 70 percent of that original total.

Additionally, many western states close the door or limit public access to state-owned land. They also limit recreational shooting, camping and other activities while charging access fees.
